Currently I enjoy it because it isn’t boring. I am relatively free to explore and experiment with a lot of ideas. I enjoy coming to work and knowing that I am not supervised so strictly from above… I have to make my own success, which isn’t the case for a lot of jobs.

I enjoy the feeling of making something from smaller parts and then seeing it in action. I guess I feel like a creator, I can’t describe the satisfaction that I get knowing I’ve made something useful. Especially when it is novel and could actually make a difference to the wider world.
I suppose I would also get the same satisfaction if I was to build my own house…something I would like to do one day if I can.

I love doing science because I have a curious mind. I like to explore and I like adventure. Being a scientist is one way to explore the unknown. If I could, I would be an astronaut! In fact, I have applied to NASA to become an astronaut candidate. Having a PhD in physics qualifies you to be a mission specialist astronaut!

I should say that my curious nature doesn’t come out only in science! I love to travel to exotic new places. I also love studying history and the arts, especially theatre! But these are some of my hobbies. For my career, I went into science because only there do I have the opportunity to discover something new, something no one else has ever known, about the nature of the universe. And I think that’s pretty cool!

As an added bonus, I get to play with some of the most awesome tech in doing my experiments — like building a solar powered laser, or using a fridge that makes temperatures colder than outer space. Now THAT is definitely awesome! 🙂
